Can some one help me

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A rectangular room is twice as long as it is wide, and its perimeter is 54 meters. Find the length of the room.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

how do we calculate the perimeter of a rectangle?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

add up all sides

OpenStudy (amistre64):

good soo l+l+w+w = 54 but w=2l what can we do with this?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

or another way to see it, w = l+l

OpenStudy (anonymous):

we dont have the length or width

OpenStudy (amistre64):

we dont need them, we know the relationship between them

OpenStudy (amistre64):

this means that we can replace w by its equivalent l value and have a 1 term equation to solve

OpenStudy (amistre64):

A rectangular room is twice as long as it is wide, |dw:1412632873100:dw|

OpenStudy (amistre64):

fine; l = w+w

OpenStudy (amistre64):

if we know w we know l by the relationship defined

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I am trying to find w but dont know how

OpenStudy (amistre64):

w+w+l+l = 54 l = w+w w+w+w+w+w+w = 54 6w = 54, what is w?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

9 oh i am stupid and l=18

OpenStudy (amistre64):

correct

OpenStudy (amistre64):

the 9 and 18 parts, not about your competence :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but where did you get 6

OpenStudy (amistre64):

well, we know that the sides add up to 54 w+w+l+l = 54 now if we knew an eqauivalent way of writing l, but used ws instead l = w+w, so lets just use that instead

OpenStudy (amistre64):

w+w+w+w+w+w = 54 we have 6 ws added up, what is the definition of multiplication?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh i get it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

am going to try to do this one The length of a rectangular garden is 8 feet longer than its width. The garden's perimeter is 208 feet. Find the width of the garden.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

or, since we know l=w+w, lets replace the w+w we have with l l+l+l = 54 3l = 54

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im stuck on this The length of a rectangular garden is 8 feet longer than its width. The garden's perimeter is 208 feet. Find the width of the garden.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

define the length for me in terms of width

OpenStudy (anonymous):

l=8+w

OpenStudy (amistre64):

good, so lets just add up all the sides (w)+(w)+(w+8)+(w+8) = 208

OpenStudy (amistre64):

solve for w

OpenStudy (anonymous):

18w=208

OpenStudy (amistre64):

w+w+w+w + 16 = 208 4w + 16 = 208 -16 -16 ------------- 4w =192 4w = 192. what is w?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

48

OpenStudy (anonymous):

w=488 l=56 thanks

OpenStudy (amistre64):

48 and 56 yes :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is it okay if you help me with a couple more?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Carpet sells for $4 per square foot and will cost you $840 to recarpet your room. If your room is 14 feet long, how many feet wide is it?
