+1 fan +1 medal !!! Read the excerpt from Paul Laurence Dunbar's poem "Sympathy." I know why the caged bird beats his wing Till its blood is red on the cruel bars; For he must fly back to his perch and cling When he fain would be on the bough a-swing; And a pain still throbs in the old, old scars Choose the option that best represents the technique that is used in the passage. A: Rhyme B: Assonance C: alliteration D: Simile

OpenStudy (stefrheart):

What do you know about each option?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the definition of each, option. Im just wondering what you guys think it is

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay well we know it's not a simile or rhyme :) because a simile uses words such as "like" & "as" while there is no rhymes in this poem. Are you following? Just trying to help so we can get the answer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yep

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think it might be B

OpenStudy (anonymous):

& you are correct, because alliteration has the same first consonant sound so it would be something like But a better butter makes a batter better. & Assonance well it's when one 2 or more words close to one another share the same letter sound. So yes, you are correct.

Can you still help me? :) @lianacarolina

Read the excerpt from Langston Hughes's poem "Scottsboro." 8 BLACK BOYS IN A SOUTHERN JAIL WORLD, TURN PALE! 8 black boys and one white lie. Is it much to die? 5 Is it much to die when immortal feet March with you down Time's street, When beyond steel bars sound the deathless drums Like a mighty heart-beat as they come? Who comes? 10 Christ, Who fought alone John Broan. That mad mob That tore the Bastile down 15 Stone by stone. Moses. Jeanne d'Arc. Dessalines. Nat Turner. 20 Fighters for the free. What two things are most likely being compared in lines 7 and 8? A: the Scottsboro boys and the beating of drums one might hear at a funeral B: time and the many victims of racial injustice C: the Scottsboro boys and the souls of others who have struggled for freedom D: Scottsboro prison and other prisons that have housed those who are innocent

I'm kind of terrible with poetry..ahh uhm in my opinion, it sounds like it could be C or D "When beyond steel bars sound the deathless drums" it's a toughie but I know it's one of those 2

OpenStudy (stefrheart):

It is C because he talks about freedom (Bastille...)

1 more! Choose the option that best explains why mystery fiction frequently addresses the following theme: People are not always what they appear to be. A:Mystery writers want to use their writing to question the goodness and integrity of all human beings, so they often depict characters that conceal their true identities. B:Mystery writers want to create plots that are full of twists and bends to keep the reader in a state of suspense. One way of doing this is to include characters that conceal their true identities. C: Mystery writers want to show that it is not safe to trust people who you have only just met. One way of doing this is to introduce the reader to characters that they think they can trust and then later reveal that these characters are actually dishonest. D: Mystery writers often visit this theme because their plots always include murders, and it is natural for the mystery writer to have the criminal who committed the murder attempt to conceal his or her identity.

@lianacarolina

This would either be B or C. But it gives you "People are not always what they appear to be" so it's asking about people..it concerns trust. So it may be C
