https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plague_doctor#Costume so the beak was there to avoid bad smells. it was stuffed with dried flower, herbs, and spices. there's no actual proof 14th century plague doctors used it though. it can be traced back to a French doctor Charles de Lorme, yay itnernet
