Car A leaves San Diego at noon driving at 60 mph along a route which is 400 miles long to San Francisco. Car B leaves San Francisco 2 hours later traveling along the same route at 80 mph. How far from the midpoint of the route are they when they meet? Are they closer to San Diego (answer "y" for yes or "n" for no)?
by the time car B stars, car A has driven for 2 hours and has covered 120 miles. So the cars are 280 miles apart. Since they are travelling towards each other, the rate at which the distance between them decreases is the sum of their speeds, 80+60 = 140. So they meet in 2 more hours. Car B has travelled 160 miles in 2 hours while car A has travelled 240 miles in 4 hours. The midpoint of the route is 200 miles from SF so 40 miles away from the meeting. They are closer to San Francisco than to San Diego when they meet. btw, it's 430 from San Francisco to Los Angeles, so over 500 to San Diego
40 miley away from the midpoint no
