you have to have some sort of ideas, something to work with. is it notation thats odd for you? or the splitup of the function? somethings gotta be rolling about up there

My most concern would be the extras, like: 7-x, and |x| +9. Do I just simply replace that number by -4, or something else?

ok, so its the pieces ... each piece is defined for a specific set of x values.

when x=-3, we use the piece that is defined for it

It's easy for me when it comes to this type of problem, 2 if (less than) 1.

f(x) = 7-x, when x <= -2 ; since x = -3 is less then x=-2 we use
this part of the setup
f(x) = .... , when -2 < x <= 0

f(x) = ... , when 0 < x

why do we setup a table? we have an equation to use

f(x) = 7 - x

when x=-3

f(-3) = 7 - -3
