there is no such mathematical operation as "simplify" 
you can add, subtract, multiply, divide, combine like terms, solve for $x$ all kinds of things, but not "simplify" and none of the above can be done to $$g(x)=12x^2 + 5x - 7$$

evaluate it at a number 
but you can't simplify it
