The distance the stone drops is 16 feet the first second, 48 feet the next second, 80 feet the third second, and so on in an arithmetic sequence. Part I: How far does the stone fall during the fifth second? Find and use the explicit formula.

Well it appears to fall 32 ft/sec, because that's the difference between 80 and 48, and 48 and 16. So add 32 for each value. The equation for this is 16 + 32 (x-1), so equal that to 1053 and solve for x.
