(4+2i)(1-i) when I foil this do I still multiply unlike terms such as 2i and 1?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

foil is a mempry device for multiplication so yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes. In order to expand (or, foil) you multiply everything in the brackets by everything else. EX: 4*1, 4*-i, and so on.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

(4+2i)(1-i) 4+2i 1 - i ------ 4 + 2i -4i -2i^2 ----------- 4 - 2i -2i^2

OpenStudy (amistre64):

or if you like a more left offset ... 4 + 2i 1 - i ------- -4i -2i^2 4 + 2i

OpenStudy (anonymous):

or if you like definitions, \[(a+bi)(c+di)=(ac-bd)+(ad+bc)i\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ahhh I see thank you very much!
