Why are items placed above or below the yield sign in an equation?

\[H _{B}^{A}\] A = Degree of oxydation. How many electrons it takes to balance B = Stat if the element. Ex: Solid (s), Liquide (L), Gas (g) and aqueous (aq)

Ex: H\[Ex: H _{aq}^{+}\]

I know that it has something to do with enzymes and all, but my questions is why are they above and below the Yield Sign, (of a chemical equation).
