The custom owl thing started a few years back and is where you take the default owl icon and modify it. Well, a lot of people actuall started with Owlfred's and modified that. Owlfred's: http://assets.openstudy.com/users/owlfred/avatar/xlarge?1334697079746 BB's as an example of what was done: http://assets.openstudy.com/users/bostonblue/avatar/xlarge?1365467895421 And attached is th default.

@owllover123 , your best bet is talking to @dumbsearch2 about Custom Owls. He basically ran the program.

With a graphics program.  Paint, Gimp, etc.

As @e.mccormick said, your best bet would be to use a vector graphics editing software.

For Mac, the best one IMO is Sketch (get the beta version, you don't have to pay), however there is no Windows version available. I'm also a big fan of Gimp, that's my go-to windows vector graphics editor.
