is this a right triangle?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (haichi):

Will answer for medal

OpenStudy (haichi):

jk yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i know it looks like one but is there a formula that i can use to make sure? someone told me to use the slope perpendicular formula or something like that but idk how to do that

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes the lines are perpendicular

OpenStudy (haichi):

If they are perpendicular then the intersection they meet at becomes a right angle

OpenStudy (anonymous):

find the slopes and if they are opposite reciprocal then they are perpendicular

OpenStudy (anonymous):

for example if the slope of one is 1/4 then the opposite reciprocal is 4/1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the slope for AC is -1 and the slope for AB is 1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

does that mean its a right triangle?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

?

OpenStudy (mrnood):

@SilverRain If the slope is 1/4 then the perpendicular has slope -4/1 (not 4/1 as you said above)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what would this mean about the triangle?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that its a right triangle? @MrNood

OpenStudy (anonymous):

?????

OpenStudy (mrnood):

if two lines are perpendicular then the slopes are 'negative reciprocal' i.e if slope of 1 is m then th eother is -1/m and conversely if to lines have negative reciprocal slopes then the are perpendicular. If AB and AC have negative reciprocal slopes then ABC is a right angle. All the info you need to decide for yourself is in th eposts above...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is the slope for AB 1?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and AC is -1

OpenStudy (mrnood):

Look - you are spending more time looking for someone to give you the answer than it would take to do it. YES slope AB IS 1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no i just needed the steps which is why im telling you what im getting

OpenStudy (mrnood):

ok

OpenStudy (mrnood):

if slope of 1 is m then the other is -1/m
