The idea is if you want the *difference* between two numbers you use subtraction the only question, is what order do you do the subtraction? if you do big - small you will get the distance as a positive number if you do small-big you will get the same number, but negative. to fix that up, put | | around the subtraction, then you will always get a positive number (and the order will not matter)
