Mrs. Falbo bought 9 adult tickets and 5 children’s tickets for the recital. The total she paid was $67. Mrs. Ustinov bought 7 adult tickets and paid $38.50. How much does each type of ticket cost?

I did

9x + 5y = 67
7x = 38.50

For my compound, then solved for x.

x = 5.50 (upon dividing by 7; this is the adults)

Now:

9(5.50) + 5y = 67
49.5 + 5y = 67
5y = 17.5
y = 3.50

Adult: 5.50
Kids: 3.50
