what does this math symbol mean?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the vertical bar + right arrow symbol in http://puu.sh/c6CwO/70aaaa2221.png

OpenStudy (perl):

i think it just means f is mapped to that sum

OpenStudy (perl):

i would need more contextual info, but it looks like what you might see for example x |-> 3x + 5 , showing the action of the function on individual elements

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it comes from this http://puu.sh/c6CGv/e71bcb8a83.png

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what do u mean by 'mapped to'

OpenStudy (perl):

mapping is another word for a function, x gets 'mapped' to y,

OpenStudy (perl):

but strictly speaking a function is a specific type of association between two sets

OpenStudy (perl):

x |-> 3x + 5 means x gets mapped to 3x + 5. another way of saying this is f(x) = 3x + 5

thanks XD
