There are many YouTube videos out there, for starters. That's how I first got familiar with basic aspects of the language. Online, you can find lists of thousands of common characters, as well as Chinese-English dictionaries, with a simple Google search. Once you've got the basics down, go over to Amazon and find some Chinese language books -- they're not too expensive -- and you're well on your way! Learning the language doesn't have to be a very costly endeavor, just apply yourself and there you go. :)
