OpenStudy (kj4uts):

A ball is dropped from a height of 12 feet and returns to a height one-half of the height from which it fell. How far will the ball have traveled when it hits the ground for the fifth time? A. 34.5 feet B. 24 feet C. 12 feet D. 1.5 feet

OpenStudy (lochana):

It's 1.5feet for sure

OpenStudy (kl0723):

it can't be... is asking how far the ball would have traveled after hitting the ground 5 times... it falls from 12 feet in the first one... that alone is way more than 1.5 feet

OpenStudy (kl0723):

so if the ball falls 12 feet and it raises to a height of 1/2 the first height, then after hitting the ground 1 time it would have traveled 12 + 12(0.5)

OpenStudy (kl0723):

so now the ball is falling 6 feet when it hits the ground for the second time... so that would be 6 + 6(0.5)... then 3 + 3(0.50) third time... 1.5 + 1.5(0.5) fourth time... then 0.75 + 0.75(0.5) fifth time... now add all of these calculations

OpenStudy (kj4uts):

I got 34.875 so A.?

OpenStudy (kl0723):

that's right :P

OpenStudy (kj4uts):

Thank you for your time and help!
