What is the difference between a positive shape and a negative shape?

Positive shapes are the main things people notice in a picture. The positive shapes are the main part of the image, such as a person's face in a portrait or the tree in a painting of a tree.

Negative shapes are the less noticeable areas surrounding the positive shapes in an image. Negative shapes might look like empty space or the background to a scene or room.
