One major effect with the clock was the ability to give an exact location on the globe. This was important for ships. The establishment of time zones was an immense help for the railroads and their scheduling. It is believed that the first all mechanical clock was invented by a monk (around 1275). The clocks in the monasteries were among the first to be fitted as alarm clocks. This gave the monks a time to ring the monastery bell.
