OpenStudy (adamaero):

What is the formula for statistical significance and how to use it?

OpenStudy (adamaero):

http://cpr.iub.edu/uploads/Oracle_Vol6_Issue1_Bureau.pdf#page=10 I want to find it for the mean of each "scale."

OpenStudy (i_love_my_nieces):

Sorry I thought I knew. @amistre64

OpenStudy (amistre64):

ive never come across this topic before so im out as well

OpenStudy (adamaero):

@ganeshie8 @texaschic101 @goformit100 @nincompoop

OpenStudy (anonymous):

depends on the test and the data. i'm sorry, but i'm not going to go through 22 pages of stuff to look for you. do some groundwork first

OpenStudy (adamaero):

I had the page selected for you.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what page?

OpenStudy (adamaero):

10 that's why I put #page=10

OpenStudy (adamaero):

Are you saying I need information other than the mean and standard error?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Regression analyses were performed first without and then with controls on each item to estimate if effects of the covariates influenced the basic relationships between group type and the dependent measures. In the regression models, all non-dichotomous variables were standardized prior to entry. As a result, in each model, the unstandardized coefficient was an estimate of the effect size.

OpenStudy (adamaero):

So what are you saying?

OpenStudy (adamaero):

Is the statistical significance something to do with the effect sizes?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i'm not saying anything... that came from the report (page 9, analysis and results). what is this for... a class? if so, what class? statistical significance is only pertaining to the hypothesis test(s) and whether or not you will reject or fail to reject the null hypothesis.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

in order to really understand what's going on, you have to dig through the whole thing, understand what they're after, what's involved and how they're approaching it. once you understand that, you'll better understand the results and what the results imply (or don't imply).

OpenStudy (adamaero):

ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i'm a bit out of practice for analyzing papers like this. you want to grab a grad student who's familiar with reading and dissecting papers and analyses.

OpenStudy (adamaero):

I am in an intro finance class and we didn't go over how to calculate statistical significance; I wondered if there was an equation that could be used for data like that. Thanks for the advice about getting a grad student!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

look up regression analysis... they're doing a bunch of things with the data just to get it to be "equivalent" in some sense, which happens. what are you supposed to do with this report or what are you supposed to look at?

OpenStudy (adamaero):

I'm merely suppose to critique any academic paper with statistics (every week). I sometimes spend too much time on what I don't know about something (that's not necessary for the grade). By the way, if you know any interesting articles, post them; I have many more weeks to critique! Or if you have any news articles, with statistics, that you may remember--have to do two of those a week.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

look at marketing papers... should be more in line with finance. also, papers in which the researchers used surveys as a way of gathering info. stick to papers about which you know something of the topic and that way you should be able to apply your common sense to the things they're after and whther or not they approached their questions in a sensible way.

OpenStudy (adamaero):

Thanks again!

you're welcome!
