What is the square root of a negative number?

OpenStudy (akashdeepdeb):

Imaginary. Wanna know why? Because, square roots of imaginary numbers cannot be represented on the usual, cartesian xy-plane. They can be represented on a more special plane called the argand plane. \[\sqrt{-1} = i\]

Thanks! This helped so much! My teacher is such an idiot! I asked him and said that he doesn't know but he expects us to know! Thanks so much!!!

geerky42 (geerky42):

He seriously said he don't know?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@geerky42 ya! He's an retrice

OpenStudy (akashdeepdeb):

Everyone has teachers like that. But it'd be wrong to term anyone an idiot.
