A mixture of two miscible liquids with whose boiling points differ by more then 50 degrees are being distilled. The temperature on the thermometer is observed to rise, plateau, then drop before rising again. Explain these results.

OpenStudy (australopithecus):

Initially the lower boiling point liquid fills the column temperature rises as this happens, then it plateaus because the column is completely filled with the liquid of lower boiling point property. It then drops after all of the lower boiling liquid is distilled away. Finally a temperature rises again as the liquid with the highest boiling point begins to turn to gas and fill the column.
