In 1827 He started to work at a law office, Then, having learned Gurney's system of shorthand, he left to become a freelance reporter. Then in 1832 he signed up for an acting audition at Covent Garden. But then a year later he submitted his first story, "A Dinner at Poplar Walk" to the London periodical, Monthly Magazine. He was a journalist at the time which definitely helped his first collection of pieces Sketches by Boz—. So learning the Gurneys system, acting, and becoming a journalist helped him because an excellent writer.
