Describe why Islam split into two different sects, Sunni and Shi'ite (i have a huge textbook btw :P but I have to write a page about this and too bad my textbook isn't big enough to tell me more info :P )

They both actually share all of the basic beliefs. However, they differ over the choice of Caliph. The Sunnis believe that the honor should go to an elected member of the tribe of Mohammad. The Shi'ites believe that the position is God-given or only to descendants of Mohammad.
