what does this question mean

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Which question?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I have no clue, this is higher than Algebra, so I really can't help :( @StudyGurl14 might know

OpenStudy (anonymous):

np

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@ikram002p @ganeshie8

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@SolomonZelman

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no clue help

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

Lets see, irrational number is a number that cannot be represented as `terminating` or `repeating` decimals.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

You're given that, after decimal point, the positions : {1, 10, 100, 1000, ... } are all 0's

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

also only those positions are 0's, other positions can be any of {1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9}

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

thats the given information, is that clear ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wait wait that itself is not very clear

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

example number : 12. `0`123456789 `0`1212121.. the next 0 occurs at 100th position

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i didn't get this part numbered 10^n and only in these places , is irrational

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

you need to prove that such a number is irrational

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh does this mean the first zero is at 10 the second zero is at 100

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the next at 10^3 ?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

exactly! start with n=0 : 10^n numbered positions are : {1, 10, 100, 1000, ... }

OpenStudy (anonymous):

got it , how do we prove that

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

not sure yet.. will try after dinner...

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

@ikram002p

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well there was a proof on it available on internet which i understand now as i got what the problem is trying to say Proof by contracdiction http://www.meritnation.com/ask-answer/question/prove-that-any-number-with-zeroes-standing-in-all-decimal-p/math/5878977

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Earlier i didn't even get the language of the problem , now i got it

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

if it makes sense its fine, but the proof in that link doesn't look thorough simply saying "irrationality is self evident" pissed me off..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

there must be a better proof ,

OpenStudy (ikram002p):

is that link only for indians xD

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is it ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well it is a indian website

OpenStudy (ikram002p):

it does int open for me cu of IP it seems hmm

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It says in number theory, we find only reasons behind the theories and most most of reasons are easy to understand theoretically. Assume be an integer,so is to left of decimal point . these are only these decimal places are zero. therefore, All digits to right of decimal point are not zero and is irrational is evident.

OpenStudy (ikram002p):

hmm in the question it says any NUMBER and that does not seems to be a proof lol
