algebra word problem help
Suppose someone opens the valve on a large water tank so that water drains out. Choose a starting volume of water in the tank (from 100 to 500 gallons), and choose how much water drains out each day (from 2 to 5 gallons). Write the equation that models the relationship between time (x) and water volume (y) in slope-intercept form. Post your equation. Choose another equation from the discussion board and answer the following. • Write the equation in slope-intercept form, and use the equation to find the amount of water in the tank exactly 2 days after the valve is opened. • Determine the slope of the line. Describe the meaning of the slope in this context. • Rewrite the equation in standard form, and use that equation to find thex- and y-intercepts. Describe the meaning of each intercept. • Do these equations represent an exact or approximate relationship between time and volume? This could be a matter of opinion. What is your opinion? Explain. Since I chose 300 as the amount of water in the tank and 5 the amount of water that leaks out per day, my equation will become. Y = 300 – 5x Y = 300 – 5x Y = 300 – 5(2) Y = 300 – 10 Y = 290 gallons in the tank after 2 days of it leaking 5 gallons a day
Is it a problem or Speech?? :P
no its a problem but this is the first time i used this website. so i didnt knw it was gonna turn out like that.this is what i have done so far Since I chose 300 as the amount of water in the tank and 5 the amount of water that leaks out per day, my equation will become. Y = 290 gallons in the tank after 2 days of it leaking 5 gallons a day
and i need these Write the equation in slope-intercept form, and use the equation to find the amount of water in the tank exactly 2 days after the valve is opened. Determine the slope of the line. Describe the meaning of the slope in this context. Rewrite the equation in standard form, and use that equation to find the x- and y-intercepts. Describe the meaning of each intercept. Do these equations represent an exact or approximate relationship between time and volume? This could be a matter of opinion. What is your opinion? Explain.
I get you till here: \(y = 300 - 5x\) After \(2\) days, you will have \(290\) gallons.. :)
Okay, this is your first part and you have done it successfully, Okay??
You can write that equation as : \(y = -5x + 300\) A Slope-Intercept Form is given by : \(y = mx + c\) Where \(m\) is the slope and \(c\) is the y-intercept meaning the where the line cuts \(y-axis..\)
Can you compare the tow equations and tell me what is your slope??
*two
I dont get it :(
See, the general equation of Slope-Intercept is given by : \(y = mx + c\) Here, \(m\) is the slope, and \(c\) is the y-intercept.. Getting till here??
Don't worry, you will find when I am here.. :P
Are you getting the general form of slope-intercept equation??
See, if you are not getting anything anywhere, ask me there itself, but do interact with me.. I am missing your reply when you don't do here.. :P
i get that y=mx+c so if thats the case y=-5x+300 soo what next
Compare those two equations, there \(x\) is common, \(y\) is also common in both, \(c = 300\) in other equation, likewise what is \(m\) in our original equation?
Let us see my drawing is good enough to make you understand what I am saying: |dw:1413365118715:dw|
