How to understand a poem?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

understanding a poem is just like reading a book but it is shorter or it maybe longer but the point is that poems have purpose for the authors to write them and being able to understand them you have to make connections with the text

To understand a poem, you need to try to find out who is the person speaking. Then what the poem is talking about. There is no antagonist or protagonist in most poems, but there is always a certain type of meaning from the poem. Yes it is like writing a book, but you need to interpret the meaning a bit differently. Hope this helps!
