|dw:1413398784734:dw| find a

OpenStudy (freckles):

You can use the Pythagorean Theorem.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

a^2 = b^2 + c^2 where a is hypotenuse, a and b are the length of the other leg then 41^2 = 40^2 + c^2 c^2 = 41^2 - 40^2 c^2 = 1681 - 1600 c = sqrt (81) c = 9 inch

OpenStudy (anonymous):

get it @terminally_capricous ??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you @freckles and @gerryliyana ! I get it now.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I wish I could medal both of you :/

OpenStudy (freckles):

Well since you already have the answer... \[40^2+a^2=41^2 \\ a^2=41^2-40^2 \\ a^2=(41-40)(41+40) \text{ by difference of squares } \\ a^2=(1)(81) \\ a^2=81 \\ a=9\]

OpenStudy (freckles):

You can do the problem without a calculator ^ :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you!!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Medal each other because you were all of great help ^-^
