Let setM = {x, 2x, 4x} for any number x. If the average (arithmetic mean) of the numbers in set M is 14, what is the value of x ?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

to get the mean, you add up the values and divide by 3

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

so because the values are x, 2x, 4x and because the mean is 14, we can set up this equation \[\Large \frac{x+2x+4x}{3} = 14\] I'll let you solve for x
