Yes it is. Any number you replace x with, and then evaluate, you'll always get a single number output for y.

Visually, this graph passes the vertical line test, so that shows you it is a function.

Yes that's what I was going to say. I first used -2,-1,0,1,2 and from there I was a bit closer to being sure it is a function. Thanks Jim.
