Optimism can still be very dangerous, because when you are too optimistic you may become carefree and not think about all the dangers that could happen to you. For example, a student in today's time is getting all A's, he becomes optimistic that it will always stay like that even if he doesn't put in any effort. He ends up not trying and fails all his classes, so even in today's time optimism can still be very dangerous.
