1. How did Napoleon unify the Germans an in how far was that unintended?

He created the Confederation of the Rhine out of 16 German States that he had conquered and they in turn were joined by 19 other smaller state entities. It existed until Napoleon's defeat in Russia when several of the members switched sides. In 1815 Austria and Prussia joined with them to create the German Confederation.
