Find the probability of finding the sum of 4 with two dice.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I mean rolling a 4 not the sum

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

probability of rolling a 4 with first throw is 1/6 probability of rolling another number on second throw = 5/6 - or the reverse could happen this should help you have you used tree diagrams?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i have not

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

I am assuming you mean that there is only one 4 obtained in the 2 rolls of the dice

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

can you work out the probability of the firsr scenario? 4 then Not 4 ?

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

ok what are the possible outcomes? 1, 4 4, 1 2, 3 3, 2 right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

4 yes

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

and what is total outcomes in the sample space the sample space is the set of all possible outcomes - 1,6 , 2,6 etc

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yep so um 1234 i guess

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

? no sample space is 36 (6 * 6)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohh

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

1,1 , 1,2 1,3 1,4 1,5 1,6 and 2,1 2,2 etc

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

so the rquired probability is 4 / 36 or 1/ 9

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you

OpenStudy (cwrw238):
