Evaluate | -4 - 10 |

OpenStudy (igreen):

This breaks into two separate expressions: -4 - 10 and -4 + 10 Can you simplify those? @kyleighdancer

OpenStudy (gorv):

how loll its modulus

OpenStudy (gorv):

-4-10 and convert this ans to positivethat is remove negativesign from final ans

OpenStudy (anonymous):

treat the | | as parentheses and do what is inside first. what is -4 - 10?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-6

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@iGreen

OpenStudy (anonymous):

6

OpenStudy (igreen):

Yes that's the answer to the first one. What's -4 - 10? @kyleighdancer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-14

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so for |-4-10|=6

OpenStudy (igreen):

Right, so the answers are -14 and 6.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you so much! you have helped me so much! i finally understand!

OpenStudy (gorv):

no no no......

OpenStudy (gorv):

|-14|=14

OpenStudy (gorv):

we have only integer here ...so ans will be only 14

OpenStudy (gorv):

|x-2|= \[\pm(x-2)\]

OpenStudy (gorv):

ans willbe 14 only

OpenStudy (anonymous):

negative! there is only one answer! You do not split that up like @iGreen suggests. -4-10 = -14 Anything that asks for the absolute value is merely asking "How far is this from 0". how far is -14 from 0? remember there are no negative distances.

OpenStudy (gorv):

yeah @pgpilot if number are only there we dont change the sign ..just remove the negative from final

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@iGreen you should not be offering assistance as you clearly don't understand what is being asked nor how to approach!

OpenStudy (gorv):

agree with u |-14|=14

OpenStudy (igreen):

Oh..my bad that's only for when there's an equal sign.

OpenStudy (gorv):

loll not ur bad ..just a silly mistake

OpenStudy (igreen):

@pgpilot326 It was a mistake, that doesn't mean I didn't understand it..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no, not true even if it were x= |-4 - 10| the answer would still only be x = 14

OpenStudy (igreen):

Yes, they're correct. You just subtract -4 - 10, which gives you -14, and the absolute value signs change it to positive 14. @kyleighdancer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

now if it were something like |x-4|=10, then you would get x = -6 and x = 14 as answers.

OpenStudy (gorv):

loll u understood i know that

OpenStudy (gorv):

@pgpilot326 he gave ans in your Q's contest

OpenStudy (gorv):

*context

OpenStudy (igreen):

I already said that. @pgpilot326

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the thing is, this person may leave with a very flawed understanding of this and that is not the goal of this site. iGreen needs to be much more careful!!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay so in the inside of the |.| you change all the - to + making it a +14

OpenStudy (anonymous):

anytime you have an absolute value, evaluate what is inside first then ignore the sign. it's exactly like distance. i live in san diego and l.a. is about 100 miles north and ensenada is about 100 miles south. the north and south are like the sign (+ or -). but when someone asks how far either is away, the answer is just 100 miles.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the sign is like direction and the number without the sign is how far. absolute value is asking "how far", not "how far and in what direction".
