anytime you have an absolute value, evaluate what is inside first then ignore the sign. it's exactly like distance.

i live in san diego and l.a. is about 100 miles north and ensenada is about 100 miles south. the north and south are like the sign (+ or -). but when someone asks how far either is away, the answer is just 100 miles.

the sign is like direction and the number without the sign is how far. absolute value is asking "how far", not "how far and in what direction".
