In physics, potential energy is the energy stored in an object due to its position in a force field or in a system due to its configuration. *Source from the Internet
simply said: an object has a potential energy, if it can fall. (The value depends on the mass of the object, the height of its possible fall and the power pf gravity or any similar power, which makes the object fall).
