It was called upon by the Pope in Rome, to retake Muslim-controlled areas / Jerusalem, Acre, etc., for Christiandom.
Any other information
Holy Orders were formed because of the Crusades, originally they were formed to aid Christians on their pilgrimages to the Holy Land and to establish hospitals, but soon become Monastic Military orders, such as the Knights Templar of Malta, Knights Hospitallier, etc., They would eventually be held responsible for the Massacres near Damascus of hundreds of Muslims, Jews, non- Christians.
Why did the crusaders go to the Holy Land?
Jerusalem was considered holy by Christians because it was where Jesus was crucified, and later where he was resurrected and ascended to Heaven - the central acts of the life of Christ and therefore the places of central focus for Christianity as a religion. The primary purpose of the Crusades was to liberate and preserve the Holy Land, particularly the holy Christian places in Jerusalem, from Muslim occupation and control. That's why the Crusaders went to Jerusalem.
