when can terms of an algebraic expression be called like terms?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

when their variables are same.....eg 3x n 5x

Like terms are variables in an equation that are the same, but with different values. Examples: 2y, 6y, 4y are all like terms. In an equation like terms would look something like this: 2y - 9x +6y + 4x. The like terms would be 2y and 6y; 9x and 4x
