what were some of the main causes of the separation between the British colonies and England as stated in the Declaration of Independence?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Basically the Declaration of Independence stated that we were tired of being ruled with an iron fist. We wanted to create a government by the people for the people. We didn't want a single ruler who swept things under the rug, we wanted to be able to have a say in stuff. We didn't want to feel like our opinions didn't matter to the people in charge.
