what happens when you add a number to the outside of a function?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Let \[y=f(x)=x+5\] Consider, x=0 \[y=f(0)=5 \] therefore \[y=5\] Thus the coordinates of the point are (0,5). Now consider \[y=g(x)=x+8\] At x=0, we find that \[y=g(0)=0+8=8\] Thus \[y=8\] The coordinates of the point given by the same value of x are now (0,8). Clearly you can see when taking values of x along x-axis and values of f(x) or y along y axis, the y coordinate increased by \[3\] for the same value of x. Thus the line will shift vertically up by 3
