Organic chem: is the functional group for alcohol no longer when looking at carboxylic acid group?

OpenStudy (adamaero):

I will be identifying functional groups for a test, and was wondering if alcohol counted in the carboxylic acid group? I'm guessing you can't name a group within a larger group?

OpenStudy (adamaero):

OpenStudy (kainui):

Yeah, similarly you wouldn't call it an aldehyde/ketone either for the other part. It's now just a carboxylic acid. Kind of weird, but it sort of makes sense since alcohols and carboxylic acids behave quite differently.
