how do glyco proteins help with cell recognition

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Glycoproteins, only recognize certain receptor molecules on other cells, so cell recognition is very specific. An example of this is the proteins on the outside of a viral capsid will only recognize receptor molecules on specific bacterial cells so the range of hosts they can have is quite small. This is generally the same process for most molecular and cell recognition processes.
