well before fluorescent lights came onto the scene, the only way to light up a room was to use a flame (candle, fire, etc) or heat up tungsten which glows brightly when heated up

this is how incandescent bulbs work, but they are very inefficient and waste a lot of energy (energy lost due to heat)
