The Franks established a Germanic kingdom in northern Gaul, in what is now France, during the 5th century A.D. In 481 A.D., a Frankish chieftain named Clovis began to expand his small kingdom. During his lifetime, Clovis united all of the Frankish tribes under his rule and then defeated other Germanic tribes until he controlled all of Gaul. He gained the support of the Church in Rome when he and his Frankish subjects converted to Christianity.
