Does The Jungle by Upton Sinclair work? It's about working class poverty, lack of social supports, harsh and unpleasant living/working conditions, and hopelessness among many workers. The entire book's point of view is seen through a Lithuanian immigrant named Jurgis Rudkus.

It's a really good read though. I was grossed out and fascinated at the same time. Takes 1 1/2 to 2 weeks tops.
