part A, B, C, D BOX PLOTS 3. The list below shows the number of computer games the store sold each day for the first 11 days it was open. 35, 46, 28, 27, 37, 79, 43, 35, 42, 29, 36 Part A. Find the five-number summary for the data. Show your work. (2.5 points) Part B. Use your results from Part A to display the data on a box plot. 25,30,35,40,45,50,55,60,65,70,75,80,85 Part C. Use your plot from Part B to find the interquartile range (IQR) of the data. Part D. Use your result from Part C to identify any outliers for the data set. Show your work.

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

first step is to sort this data set: 35, 46, 28, 27, 37, 79, 43, 35, 42, 29, 36 sort from smallest to largest what do you get?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I get part a and b mostly but whats c and d

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

what did you get for part A?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wait isn't part where u find the mean and range ect

OpenStudy (anonymous):

or was I wrong

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

sorta

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

you find the min, Q1, median, Q3, and the max

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohhh

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

do you know how to find those?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah im gonna tell u what they r then tell me if im right

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

alright

OpenStudy (anonymous):

27 28 29 35 35 36 42 43 46 79 ok so 27 is the min, q1 is 29, median 36, q3 is 43 than max is 79

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think I did something wrong

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

you forgot a 37

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh yah

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

so what is your new sorted set?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok so it goes 27 29 36 43 79

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

good, that's your 5 number summary

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohh ok

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

the IQR is equal to Q3 - Q1

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

that's for part C

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so do I have to make the numbers high to low and do the same thing or what

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh wait nvm I got confused for a sec

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what do I do in part d

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

for part D, you need to calculate the lower and upper fence

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

first off, what did you get for the IQR?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

IQR for part b I got.. waita sec

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

part B is the box plot part C is the IQR

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Lower quartile : 37.5 Upper quartile : 72.5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Interquartile range is 35 right??

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

Q3 = 43 Q1 = 29 IQR = 43 - 29 = 14

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

The lower fence is Q1 - 1.5*IQR = 29 - 1.5*14 = 8 Anything to the left of the lower fence of 8 is an outlier

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

Upper fence: Q3 + 1.5*IQR = 43 + 1.5*14 = 64 anything to the right of the upper fence is an outlier

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohhh ok now I get it sorry im probably giving u a hard time things like these just get me confused haha..

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

the min is 27 which is NOT to the left of the lower fence of 8 so we have no outliers on the left side

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

the max is 79 79 is to the right of the upper fence (64) so 79 is an outlier. It is the only outlier since it is the only value larger than 64

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
