In what ways did the views of W.E.B. DuBois and Booker T. Washington differ? Washington wanted a focus on liberal arts education, whereas DuBois felt the focus should be on vocational training. DuBois fought only for social equality, whereas Washington fought only for economic equality. They both fought for social equality, but only DuBois fought for economic equality. Dubois focused on achieving equality in the South, while Washington's focus was in the North.

DuBois believed that African Americans should attack racism. He was involved in the founding of the NAACP, which took many cases of racial discrimination to court in an effort to get the nation to live up to the promises of the 13th and 14th Amendments. Washington believed that African Americans should cooperate with whites and accept temporary segregation to get along with southern whites. He thought that racial equality would come gradually.
