help please! :c medal

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Without graphing, classify each system of equations as independent, dependent, or inconsistent. { 6x – 2y = 2 2 + 6x = y

OpenStudy (redheadangel):

can you define those terms?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oops sorry { 6x-2y=2 2+6x=y and what do you mean? sorry im horrible at algebra 2 /:

OpenStudy (redheadangel):

it's ok: do you know what independent ,dependent, and inconsistent mean?

OpenStudy (redheadangel):

here, I have to go hopefully @Here_to_Help15 can help you!

OpenStudy (here_to_help15):

i am always being refered by you @redheadangel :P

OpenStudy (here_to_help15):

hey dr

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes Inconsistent means the system cannot be solved there is no solution. Dependent means that at least one of the equations can be derived from the others in the system. Independent means that none of the equations can be derived from the other equations.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay c: thank you anyway!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hey :) @Here_to_Help15

OpenStudy (here_to_help15):

hey :)

OpenStudy (here_to_help15):

ok this is in a textbook correct?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do you mind helping me with a few problems? s:

OpenStudy (here_to_help15):

ill see whats i can dos

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay thank you c:!

OpenStudy (here_to_help15):

np and is it?

OpenStudy (here_to_help15):

sorry im leaving @myininaya please please help @DrPepperx3

OpenStudy (here_to_help15):

@e.mccormick please help

OpenStudy (here_to_help15):

Ok dr someone messenged me that they will help you in a bit

OpenStudy (here_to_help15):

is that fine?

OpenStudy (here_to_help15):

@iGreen

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that's fine thank you

OpenStudy (here_to_help15):

@KlOwNlOvE

OpenStudy (here_to_help15):

Don't worry the help you need is here sorry btw :/

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I hope so :c I suck at these problems.. and it's okay

OpenStudy (redheadangel):

also @studygeek15

myininaya (myininaya):

Independent means the system has one solution Inconsistent means there are no solutions Dependent means there are infinite solutions

myininaya (myininaya):

You are looking at: 6x-2y=2 2+6x=y

myininaya (myininaya):

Try to find the solutions and tell me how many there are

myininaya (myininaya):

The bottom one is already solved for y so I suggest subing it into the first equation

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can you give me examples on how to solve equations like those? that's what I have a hard time with

OpenStudy (anonymous):

step by step if you don't mind :c

myininaya (myininaya):

Pretend we have the system x+2y=8 y=4x+1 The bottom equation is solved for y so I will go ahead and replace the y in the first equation with the 4x+1 . x+2y=8 x+2(4x+1)=8 (now solve for x) x+8x+2=8 9x+2=8 9x=6 x=6/9=2/3 and we can find y from the y=4x+1 equation y=4(2/3)+1 y=8/3+1 y=8/3+3/3=11/3 so the solution of the system x+2y=8, y=4x+1 is (2/3,11/3) So the system is independent since we have the one solution

myininaya (myininaya):

Pretend we have the system x+y=5 2x+2y=5 We could do this problem by elimination instead of substitution (like we did the first one; though we could also do sub by solve for y or x in the first in pluggin it into the next) so elimination ... multiply the first equation by -2 we get the new first equation is -2x-2y=-10 but adding these equations together -2x-2y=-10 2x+2y=5 ------------ 0x+0y=-5 0 + 0=-5 0=-5 Since 0 never equals -5 then there no solution to the system x+y=5, 2x+2y=5. Therefore the system is inconsistent.

myininaya (myininaya):

Pretend we have the system x-y=6 2x-2y=12 If you notice without actually going through the process that these are actually the same equation and therefore have infinitely many solutions and therefore the system is dependent then you are done. You could solve my elimination again (or sub). I prefer elimination. Multiply first equation by -2 so we have -2x+2y=-12 -- So adding the equations give us: -2x+2y=-12 2x-2y=12 -------------- 0 +0=0 0=0 is always true therefore infinitely many solutions therefore system is dependent

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay so tell me if im doing this right 6x-2y=2 2+6x=y so 6x*6=36x and since the first equation is subtract 2 and the second equation is+2 means it cancels that out? so its 36x+3=y?

myininaya (myininaya):

Did you replace the first y with the 2nd y in terms of x? Like the second y=2+6x so we can replace the first y with 2+6x so we have 6x-2(2+6x)=2 have you solve this equation for x?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh no I didn't >_< .. so 6x-2(2+6x)=2 so x=-1?

myininaya (myininaya):

right so we will have one solution which means the system is independent I don't the question asking to solve for the solution so I guess you don't have to find y

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay :) thank you! can you list the steps again up to where I found x? and do you mind helping me with a couple more?
