you can find it numerically. plug in numbers very close to 'a'
f( a - e) or f ( a + e ) for e very small should equal to the limit
you can find it algebraically, by canceling common factors or multiply by conjugate. and you can look at the graph and see if the limit exists

algebraic, numerical, and graphical are three ways to find limit there's actually a fourth way to find a limit, using the formal epsilon delta definition
