Is the group of words a simple sentence, a compound sentence, or a run-on sentence? Whales swim in deep water but surface for air. A. simple sentence B. run-on sentence C. compound sentence

OpenStudy (aamirgsen):

It's a compound sentence because a compound sentence has for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so. This sentence has but; hence it's a compound sentence :)

OpenStudy (girlover):

This is a simple sentence because the but does not have a complete thought after it.it would be a compound sentence if the second half of the sentence had complete thought with a noun and a verb but in this case no because there is only a verb AMD no subject! I hope that made it clear

Thanks :-)
