Please Help! The container that holds the water for the football team is 1/2 full. After pouring in 3 gallons of water, it is 7/10 full. How many gallons can the container hold?

OpenStudy (1645323):

use a proportion so 3/.7 and x/.5 solve for x and multiply by 2

Your answer doesn't make sense. If you solve for x, you get approximately 2.14. If you multiply that number by two, you get approximately 4.29 gallons. But if the container holds 4.29 gallons, then half of it would be 2.14 gallons. However, if you add 2.14 gallons to 3 gallons, the container is going to overflow.
