Please Help! The container that holds the water for the football team is 1/2 full. After pouring in 3 gallons of water, it is 7/10 full. How many gallons can the container hold?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

Let x = capacity of container (in gallons)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

it's currently 1/2 full, so we have (1/2)*x gallons of water in it right now

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

you pour in 3 more gallons, so you add 3 to (1/2)*x to get (1/2)*x+3 the current gallon amount is now at (1/2)*x+3

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

at this amount, the container is 7/10 full, so (1/2)*x+3 is equal to (7/10)*x

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

the equation you need to solve is (1/2)*x+3 = (7/10)*x I'll let you do this

Thanks

But, i cant figure it out still, how do i solve this?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

multiply both sides by the LCD 10 to clear out the fractions

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

that should help things a bit

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

what do you get when you do that?
